Gemotions

The soft rhythm of the waves reached Liam's ears as he sat on the porch. He had just finished trimming the roses, his hands pleasantly gritty with soil. The ocean breeze carried the scent of salt and something else…a hint of his grandmother's perfume, he thought.

He’d decided to tackle the old trunk in the guest room, a task that always seemed to bring out a wave of memories. He pulled it open, the scent of lavender and old linen filling the air. Amongst the folded blankets and lace doilies, he found a small, leather-bound notebook.

Inside, tucked between pressed flowers, a typed letter, a single page. His grandmother’s name at the top, followed by the familiar company letterhead. It was a resignation letter, dated almost sixty years ago. Liam closed his eyes, a peaceful smile playing on his lips. He could almost hear her, her voice, her laughter.
